Life In Milwaukee - Kaustubh's Diaries

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

Welcome to the City of Cheese, Beer, and Harley-Davidson! Welcome to Milwaukee! The place which a lot of us call home and the city which will be your home in the coming days. We know you are excited for your trip to the US and we look forward to ushering you into the next chapter of your life. But before we get there, why not get to know your city a little better?

We are sure you have scoured through the Wikipedia pages about Milwaukee, so we won’t tell you “fun-facts” about the population, size or the founding date of the city. The things we will tell you include what its like to be a part of the UWM and Milwaukee community and how we enjoy our life during the semesters. Of course, right now the world is going through an unprecedented time, but we are keeping our eyes peeled for the sliver of hope. We believe in our healthcare workers and the scientists working on a vaccine.

Now first things first, UWM is located in the Upper East Side of Milwaukee where you will find majority of the student populace. The neighborhood is a quiet peaceful community apart from the occasional parties which are thrown by a few houses scattered around the blocks. There are ample of parks and recreational activities open to the public such as football grounds, tennis courts, disc-golf arenas, and running tracks. Apart from that, the amazing Bradford beach is always a favorite during summertime! But beware, even during a hot scorching summer day, the water might not be warm enough to dip your feet. What can we say apart from welcome to Midwest!

Oh, that reminds us, do you know the few specialties of Wisconsin? We have beer-cheese soup! Yup! That’s an actual thing! We have brats, which are heavily influenced from the German ancestry of the city. Then come the sports which everyone in Wisconsin religiously follows. You have the Green Bay Packers who play in the NFL, Milwaukee Bucks who play in the NBA, and Milwaukee Brewers who play in the NBL, and you support all three the moment you step in Wisconsin. Nope! Forget about supporting anything from Chicago. You’re in the Dairy Land of America now!

There is a lot more to explore from the millions of parks, the historical Third Ward, the multitude of cultural festivals, the biggest music festival in the world, i.e., Summerfest and the beautiful sunsets at the McKinley marina! The city will never stop to amaze you! It’s proximity to Chicago and O’Hare International Airport eases the travel to visit new locations and the availability of hiking trails and forests preserves opens up opportunities to experience new adventures. Oh by the way, did we mention the UWM Outdoor Pursuits group which takes you on trips to learn archery, axe throwing, camping, and even scuba diving in the beautiful lake Michigan, a historical lake that is a remnant of the ice age!

There’s a whole new world waiting for you at UWM and in the city of Milwaukee! Are you excited to start a new chapter of your life?
