Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is temporary employment authorization for F-1 visa non-immigrant foreign students in the United States while enrolled in a college-level degree program.

Once the employer lets you know that you have been selected for the position, these are the crucial guidelines that need to be followed -

1. Get Offer Letter from the Employer.

2. Enroll for summer semester’s course/class designated for internship by your department through PAWS. Contact your academic advisor regarding the enrollment.*

3. Go to https://www.isssconnect.uwm.edu/secure/

  1. Enter login credentials.

  2. Select CPT under Summer 2020 Section.

  3. Enter contact details of employer and academic advisor to send verification requests.

  4. Complete the student acknowledgement at the end.

  5. Once you have enrolled for the course, verification from the academic advisor and employer have been completed and the student acknowledgment has been signed, you can submit the application.

The UWM-ISSS (CIE) Immigration Coordinators review applications every Thursday and sends out decisions. Once your application is approved, a new i- 20 will be sent to you by mail. You are expected to sign the new i-20 as well.

*For CEAS Graduate Students, you are expected to enroll for the Advanced Independent Study Course for the internship/co-op. Discuss with your academic advisor regarding the number of credits he/she is willing to grade you for (normally 1 for the Summer). Upon discussing the grading criteria and number of credits, send out an email to Mrs. Warras at bwarras@uwm.edu asking her to enroll you for the course. Once you send her the request, she would need a confirmation from your academic advisor as well (Email approvals from academic advisors are accepted considering the COVID-19 factor). Once she has the necessary information, she will enroll you for the required course.

PS: You cannot enroll for the course by yourself as it requires a permission number.
